Re: Mantras
Ooooo, I like calm & relaxed! And the fries & beer one, I used something similar regarding the chocolate milk that was waiting for me last weekend. Mmmmm chocolate!Mrs. Schuey wrote:I repeat the words, "calm and relax". I got the idea after reading some stuff about Desiree Davila and the things she tells herself.
Lately, however, on my long runs I've been known to repeat the words, "hot fries and beer". Haha!
Haha! Lemme guess? 2007? My friend uses Chicago '07 as proof she can get through anything.ChasMcG wrote:Nothing can be as bed as your first marathon in Chicago now stop your crying bitch!
Priceless! May have to steal this one!Dave-O wrote:For a race: Groove, Trust, Endure.

Re: Mantras
I guess I need some work on coming up with a mantra or something to tell myself in races. I like some of what you guys use. My thought process is almost always "wow, this really sucks eggs" and then I look around and find some other racer faring even worse than me and think "well, I'm doing better than him/her". That's neither particularly positive or nice but that's usually what's going on with me in races.

Re: Mantras
Depends on how much pain I'm in and whether I feel like internalizing(1,2,3,4...100,99,98,97,96...) or externalizing(Oh wow, That's a nice view, That's a cute girl, Wow, cool house, cool song, etc., or the best one ...
"Damn, my hands are sticky from that last gel, this stinks."
I've covered half a mindless mile by the time I get them unsticky.

I like to picture Rocky IV, when Rocky is fighting Drago. Rocky is in his corner and his trainer Duke is yelling at him, "All your strength, all your power, all your love. Everything you've got.
Right now!"
Right now!"

You do that in mile 22 and will fade hard after mile 23.

Funny thing, I usually find myself saying that when I'm driving!
My thoughts exactly. Do we all have our regular personality and then our alone-in-the-car personality?

Re: Mantras
"I feel good. I feel great. I feel wonderful." Bob used it in What About Bob, and it works for me.
Another one I say sometimes is "just relax and run." I tend to tense up in races and sabotage myself and it saying it really does help me relax.

Actually, after mile 23 I think about what Jerry would do and I find a little bit more...

Don't do that to yourself Nick, normally by that time Jerry is checked in and off pace and running for fun waving flags to the fans. I think Jerry needs to find a mantra to get him back to a big PR.
Common on Jerry you can do it even over weight!
You can do it Jerry because you are

Yes we do! I constantly look in the mirror. I never do that anywhere else. I don't even have a mirror in my purse but the moment I put my seatbelt on, I become this vain driver who is texting while driving 80 in a school zone. Okay, only the first part of that is true But I check my hair the whole time I'm driving!

Re: Mantras
Funny, because you all seem like really nice people in real life, but assholes in cars
I'm the opposite. Pretty snarky in real life, zen in the car.
