50 mile training program
Just wondering what you all think of this training program for a first 50 miler. I am really wanting to run the Chicago Lakefront 50 miler Oct 2013. I followed their program for the 50K I ran last yr although some of the 3-5 mile days I did increase since I was already running more than they require the first month or so. Any thoughts, modifications, suggestions?

edit to add: If I were to run this my goal would be to finish, not a time expectation. I ran my 50K (Lakefront) in 5:29.

I bought "Relentless Forward Progress" by Bryon Powell and he has some good plans as well. Plus the book is FULL of excellent advice for ultras. I highly recommend it.

Re: 50 mile training program
That stretch of 31, 24+10, 26+10 seems like overkill without enough recovery. I'd change it to a 30+10, cutback, 20+10+20 (F-Sun) instead.
Re: 50 mile training program
Hey Julie ... good choice! The Ultraladies plan is the foundation of my training for all three of the JFK 50 Milers I have run. I modified it each time (mostly adding miles), but the philosophy behind it is solid -- some of which is nicely laid out in the footnotes provided by Santa Clarita Runners. Note that my first JFK 50 was and is my only DNF. But that wasn't because my training was insufficient. It was because my ankles were not prepared for the the footing on the Appalachian Trail. Good choice!

Re: 50 mile training program
Thanks for the feedback!
The Omaha Marathon is the end of Sept probably would be 4 weeks (maybe 5?) before this so that should fit in well with the program. But I am thinking some of those longer runs won't be able to be in organized races, which is fine. I imagine 24+ miles solo would be better for my mental stamina anyway.

Julie, my plan right now is to do the Lakefront 50 in 2013 so see you there. I thought you mentioned you probably wouldn't do that one as you've already done IL?

I did think that but I don't want my first 50 miler to be trail and the drive to Chicago isn't all that bad (about 11 hrs) and my husband's willing to drive and I think it could be another fun family vacation. The thought of combing a further away 50 miler for my first one plus probably trail since most of them are trail I think would be too difficult or at least asking for trouble.
I am putting my 50 states goal behind trying to find a good 50 miler so I'm not too worried about state repeats right now. Plus I'm running out of states close by and will probably have to do most of them when we're done having kids.

sounds good to me! You'd just have to wait for me to finish as I am betting I'll be quite a bit slower than anyone else.
The good things is my friends I run with don't think it's crazy and are actually supporting this goal and my mom is buying me the book!

Sure as long as I'm not lying unconscious somewhere on the path.

Looks like I might have to look at this for 2013. Maybe I will forget my first 50 miler by then and will join all of you.

I'm having to ignore a few memories of my 50K to even consider this.

Actually, my 50 miler in June was not as difficult as my second 50K in August. After August I told myself, never again.
