Now to Scream Half Marathon

Post  Gobbles on Sun Apr 22, 2012 7:16 pm

I've decided to start a running blog, maybe I will actually hit my workouts sooner rather than later. Wink

This cycle ends in a July Half Marathon, didn't I learn my lesson after a hot Boston - I guess not. Razz

This cycle will have 4 races:
3000m on the Track
4 Mile Road Race finishing inside Turner Field
Peachtree Road Race - Never ran well at this race, maybe this is the year
Scream Half Marathon - Not a super easy course, but a huge net downhill, shooting for ~1:18

During this buildup I will also run a few track races, but these are not certain yet.

I will also be coaching an "In-traiining for Peachtree Road Race Group", so I will be running some very slow miles on Saturdays.

This will be a lower peak mileage build (Max 70).

First Few Weeks of Training:

Training Paces:

Training Day #1 in the bag.

10.3 Miles @ 8:11 (8:37 --> 7:52, 0.25 mile pickup in 1:18) With PTC Group

Calves are still a bit tight from Monday, but cruising along pretty easily.

The descent:

I've been told the parts of it can be pretty rough, but it is fast...

Where is this race? My ATL based daughter might be interested. She should join your PT training group too.

OK, I get it. Sounds like fun!

"The Scream! is a USATF certified half marathon run mainly on the upper half of the Ridge to Bridge Marathon course in the mountains and foothills of western North Carolina. The course is comprised of a 2.5 mile section of paved road at the top, with the remainder following the US Forest Service road through the Pisgah Forest. The elevation profile is best described by the name of the event: 2,000+ feet of screaming descent from Jonas Ridge down to the sleepy ghost town of Mortimer."

Mr. Mountain Dog, it is about 4 hrs from ATL. It also looks like it may close out this week.

I have to say I love your spreadsheet. I am glad I am not alone with the insanity of scheduling. But yours looks so dam neat not sure I can compete with it.

That is a hell of a HM you are training for. Do you plan to incorporate some hill repeats going down hill?

Wish I could join you at Peachtree this year, but the injury bug knocked me out of this one.

I've run Ridge to Bridge, Stephen, and it is indeed a fast portion of the course if you are a good downhill runner. Since the miles are in the middle of the marathon (6-15), you have to be careful not to overdue, but it sure was a fun portion of the course. Now remember that the road is hard packed dirt and not asphalt. The hill section was pretty good footing-wise and there was very little loose gravel. If it is a dry summer though, I would expect some dusty areas. It is also very shaded which could be good or bad depending on humidity and rain cycles.

I'm excited that you are a Peachtree coach. I'm looking forward to it as it will be my last opportunity to coach for the ATC Crying or Very sad . Unfortunately, I will not make it to the group run, so I guess I'll have to wait to see you again after the Atlanta Half on Turkey Day as I'm planning on coming back to run.

Hey, maybe New York first? What about the father's day 4-miler?

Regarding the dry areas, I hope to be in position, were I won't be eating too much dust? Wink

Well, the lungs are still at 75%. Looks like I still have mild-moderate bronchitis, and had severe bronchitis and pneumonia. (By wife caught my cold, with identical symptoms, and when to the doctors after about 3 days).

Since I really didn't have the lungs for a track workout in the cold (mid 30s here in GA).

7.5 Miles with a little pickup toward the end.

Stephen - We have five (5) coaches, but the other head coach and I are really one since he will not be around in May and I will not be around in June - so essentially 4. I take out the intermediate runners and in yesterday's oppressive heat and with the hills we run, we did 4.5 miles in the 40 min.

Sun 4/29: 10.2 miles @ 8:01
Mon 4/30: 4.1 miles @ 8:04
Tue 5/1: Lazy
Wed 5/2: 8.5 miles @ 7:36
Thu 5/3: 7.2 miles @ 7:35
Fri 5/4: 7.0 miles @ 7:14 6x800 (400 Jog Recovery): 2:39, 2:39, 2:38, 2:35, 2:36, 2:34 [Negative split 800/0.25s - Felt strong, not quite pre-Boston, but getting better]
Sat 5/5: 5.4 miles @ 8:28 & Coaching 3.8 miles @ 10:21 (This run ranged from 4:30 pace to stopping, to keep my group of 7 runners from getting lost on pretty hilly terrain)
Sun 5/6: 10.2 @ 8:13

This heat/Humidity is killing me. Many of these runs were in 85+ deg heat...The ones that weren't were in 70+ with 95% humidity.

OK, I had 2 coaches, including me, yesterday, so basically a run group and a run/walk group.
My runners are not quite at 10 min/mile pace; my fastest are at 10:50~11:30 range, and my run-walkers have huge range (13~18 mins/mile)

I'm concerned that the course run will be too big a mileage step up. My slow walkers, this may be almost double...

I've already seen that about 3 of my runner have significant potential, they are reasonable fit, have a smooth gait, and could run faster will little coaxing.

Not yet. I just saw the form and printed out tonight. The RD emailed me back to see what he could do a week ago but I haven't heard back yet. Sent him a reminder tonight. I will prepare the forms to send in tomorrow.
