A long run before a 10k

Post  mountandog on Fri May 18, 2012 8:18 pm

As I posted in another thread, I'm planning to run the Midland marathon this weekend to accompany a couple of runners that missed their BQ's last April due to the heat. I'm now considering bailing on it because I also want to run the USTA Masters 10k in two weeks. I was certainly willing to run the marathon if I had a shot at a PR but now I'm wondering as the heat is supposed to hit just over 80 by the end of the race and its gonna be 65 at the start. I don't want another Bos experience as I never could recover in time for a decent 10k in just two weeks. So, after my long-winded introduction, here is my question:

If I run Midland, given the temps outlined, but run it closer to 15-20 min slower than my PR, help my brother get his BQ, basically use it as a faster long training run, is this gonna kill me in 2 wks for the 10k? Or do I just bail completely.

Even though I hate doing this I'll answer your question with a question - which is more important to you - helping your brother or having a good race in two weeks? You can't do both.

How about jumping in and helping him the second half when he'll need it the most? That way you still get to help him and not kill your chances of having a great race in two weeks.

Good luck and have fun!

Agree with Ben... If it were me: Ditch the marathon, run the 10K. And personally... running with someone (especially late in a marathon) has never helped me. Probably irritated me more than anything! Not sure you would really be helping him.

yeah I agree Dave. If I run I do it on my own. They don't want any support after the halfway point. I know I just go into my own world too.

Does it make any sense just to go out and run it as a training run, or is it too close to the 10k? (Two weeks away) I'm no 10k expert so I'm not really sure what the last 2-3 weeks before a race should look like. I've always done them as fun runs or as part of a marathon cycle.

Everybody is different but in my opinion, that is WAY too long for a long run...I really don't change up much of anything before a 10K. Maybe back off the miles a bit the 2-3 days before. Last speed workout 4/5 days out.

Half would be more appropriate distance for a long run if you want to nail the 10K.
