Yeah, it's crazy. Even when they take it easy on you. Here's mine: See 8th place in the 1500m

Re: Stupid Mistake?
My best friend from college got pretty serious about running after school and I didn't pay any attention to what he did or quite how fast he was. He ran a lot and was clearly good at it as that was all he did - none of us cared. A few years ago after I started running, I visited and stayed with him and his wife in Germany and we went on a couple of runs together for the first time. Hardest. Runs. Ever. Straight up mountains at what felt like 5k pace/effort to me and the runs went on and on and on. He completely broke me and never once moved out of easy conversation pace for himself and chatted away the whole time I was almost stroking out. Back in the post-college days, he was a 1:05 half and 2:19 full guy but NOW I know what those numbers really mean!!! I've done 3 runs with Pat (those 2 in Germany and one when he came here) and I don't think I've actually made him actually work out yet. But those are 3 of my best running memories.

Re: Stupid Mistake?
I offered a guy new to our running club that lives near me but that I've never met a ride to a race this past Saturday. We were casually talking about what we were hoping to run this 12K in. Me: 50:00. He: Sub-42.
Turns out he won the 3K Steeple Nationals running for Iowa State and ran in the Russian Olympic Trials. He won the Drake Relays 4 times, and was All-American all 4 years.
He mentioned his 3K Steeple PR, but I couldn't really relate to it. But, his 5K PR is 14:01. That I can relate to.
I now know 3 people that were National Class in, of all events, the 3K steeple - Hal, Matt Wiltse and this guy.

Re: Stupid Mistake?
Two years ago, I showed up for a pre-race workout of 1 mile, 1k, and 800m with my coach, supposed to be very hard. There was a new guy there, someone who I was told was looking to join our team. He looked fit, though not super skinny like an elite runner. I was typically the fastest in our training group, so when he went out hard, I followed. I think we split the first 400m in 64, way faster than I could hold for a mile. I stumbled in with a time of 4:38, him well ahead of me.
I'm buddies with the guy now, who turns out to have a 4:05 mile PR to his name. Oops.

On a regular basis in high school. My high school coach was his coach when he ran for Belvidere, IL in the mid '70s. He also ran for Nike at one point and was coached by none other than the famous Jack Daniels, who was employed by Nike at the time doing a lot of work/research for their sponsored training teams. My coach actually had a direct line to Daniels and that gave us a huge advantage over everybody else because of it.
I've also run quite a few times with a guy named Ron Wartgow, who I think still holds the state record for the mile in Illinois at 4:07.8. Fast, but the best part of the race where he ran the time in was they went through the half mile in 2:07. And then he ran a 2 flat second half. As a high school senior.

Re: Stupid Mistake?
This guy from my running community messaged me last year asking about a half marathon race that he new I was in. He had a late issue with a race he was planning to do and was looking for another to replace it. Needless to say that person drove up the night before the race to register and ended up finishing in 5th place overall (even though he had a bad day). I on the other hand, PR'd and finished 42nd.
That person is none other than Dave Strubbe. Have you heard of him??
