Re: Hall Withdraws from NYC
Is it just me, or is this the deal with many, many, many of today's elite/pro runners? Seems like every other bio during the Olympics talked about how the runner had been battling X injury for Y months and would s/he be okay...?

In his book, Hudson says the hardest part of coaching an elite athlete is to convince them to slow down/rest/back off etc. The competitive nature in most runners, especially elites, is to push push push to get better. Finding the right balance between hard work and protecting against injuries isn't easy.
That, of course, is where there's a huge benefit to having a human coach watch you every day and make the decision when its time to back off.

Elite or not - this is the tendency of all of us (or at least 90+% of us on this board). Just read our posts and you will see. That is where I see the advice from a "human" coach being a godsend. I think you will 2nd that feeling soon as well Dave-), if not already. (How did it go on Sunday, by the way?)
Hall seems to have a lot going on as his house in CA is for sale.
Re: Hall Withdraws from NYC
I agree, Michele, I'm slow and I still need my running friends to tell me to take a day off or that I don't need to run so many miles (or to motivate me to get out of bed at 4:50 for a run most days).

Maybe he heard another voice.................

The injuries make him human, but as an elite, he really could have prevented some of it. Maybe Alberto will take him on.

Would you in Alberto's place, when you have athletes like Farah and Rupp who really pay attention?Michele "1L" Keane wrote:... Maybe Alberto will take him on.

No, but he does have a lot of talent and everyone likes a challenge, right?
Re: Hall Withdraws from NYC
True on both counts. Seriously, I'd like to see him progress his career.Michele "1L" Keane wrote:Chris Coleman wrote:Would you in Alberto's place, when you have athletes like Farah and Rupp who really pay attention?Michele "1L" Keane wrote:... Maybe Alberto will take him on.

Re: Hall Withdraws from NYC
He did take a "sabbath" day every week where he had complete rest. A full 24 hours rest per week seems like a lot for an elite marathoner. But clearly, he did something too much because something broke. It happens to the coached and uncoached alike.Dave-O wrote:

That being said, I tend to agree with you at this point. I thought it was good for him to go it alone awhile. But clearly, the experiment failed. He's not one of those runners who does better on his own.Dave-O wrote:That, of course, is where there's a huge benefit to having a human coach watch you every day and make the decision when its time to back off.

Yep great point Hudson makes in his book. I have to admit that book of his is a great reference for all of to read and reread! I can't express how much I have learned from it.
As for Hall I have to agree with you now Dave. I was one that liked the idea of him going on his own and following his own heart. I would have to say the experiment is over and if Hall wants to continue running or wants to compete at winning the majors I think it is time for him to get a coach. To be honest I think a relationship of Hall and Hudson in Boulder would be pretty cool. Thoughts?

Re: Hall Withdraws from NYC
A good running friend of mine (and teacher) from Atlanta posted this in her blog:
"Ryan Hall is considering replacing his coach. God and I talk daily and he suggested he too wanted Ryan to get a new coach 1. He does not work on Sundays 2. There are no Marathon Majors in Utah 3. He is really busy these days putting out fires with terrorism, world hunger and massive ignorance (I'm trying to help with the latter--why we talk at least once daily) On another note, he told me teachers in 2012 are effing Saints. Okay, maybe those were not his exact words. (-;"
Thought you might all get a kick out of it.

But hey, there is always fishing (http://innovationforendurance.msn.com/articles/detail/running/253919765)
Seriously - hope the best for a really likeable guy, but it seems like there needs to be an unpopping sound coming from his direction pretty soon...
