MCM 2014 with a little help from my friends
Last Sunday's Marine Corps Marathon was my 26th marathon and my 7th MCM. Due to a 5 week work stint in Nigeria and several other factors, my training was really sub-par ... I had done only one 20 mile run. Going into the race I knew that just finishing with a decent time would be an accomplishment. So I set my sights on running easy (no faster than 7:40/mile) and finishing under 3:30 (10 minutes faster than my BQ standard).
Now y'all know I always start way too fast. No exception this year. It was a gorgeous crisp morning. A dozen Marines and Army soldiers para-sailed in with huge American flags & two VTOL vehicles performed an impressive flyover. We were all pumped up. The howitzers fired and we were off! My splits every 5K show that I bolted ... again. But I was feeling good. And I made my time goal, coming in at 3:28:30 with a little help from my friends Mike, Chris and Jason. Marathon Photos documented my entire journey this year with stunning clarity. So without much narration, here is how my race unfolded in pictures. Many thanks to Mike, Chris, Jason and MarathonFoto.
So much for starting easy (no faster than 7:40/mile) sheesh!
Key Bridge mile 4
Georgetown mile 5
Georgetown mile 5
Rock Creek Parkway mile 7
Memorial Bridge (Lincoln Memorial) mile 11
Tidal Basin (Jefferson Memorial) mile 12
Thumbs up on Independence Ave at Washington Monument mile 16
At the Capitol Building mile 19
At the Capitol Building in mile 19 and still having fun
At the Museum of the American Indian in mile 19
At the Smithsonian Institution mile 20
Crystal City mile 23
And I'm paying the price for those free-wheeling early miles
In the last mile
Yeah ... it hurts
You see the hill, You TAKE the hill!
3:28:30 -- Oorah!
It takes a team

Been waiting for this one, Kevin. Had a great time taking in DC's sights with you and SPRINTING BY EVERY BAND ON THE COURSE. You definitely got your money's worth in this race with the air guitar and crowd-riling.
Recover well and I'll be shooting you a line to set something up soon.

Nicely done, and wow! I've never seen a racecourse with so many photo ops. It shows your steely focus, despite the efforts of a couple of bandits to distract you!

Awesome! Those pictures are great showing what the marathon is like, easy and smooth to gritting your teeth through the pain. Great job on meeting your goal!

OK Kevin, I was getting pretty pissed as I looked at your photos watching you cruise along so comfortably and chatting away on your way to BQ-10 min. 3:28 finish. Finally, the photo just before you crossed the finish line...you finally looked like I'm used to seeing myself look like late in a marathon. Nice job setting yourself up for a return to Boston in 2016. If I can hit my goal in Philly in three weeks (a not so comfortable time of under 3:30), I can look forward to seeing you again up there.

Re: MCM 2014 with a little help from my friends
Thanks Mark, Michael, Julie, Dot, Tom, Jim, Michele, Nancy and Alex for your kind remarks ... and I really like the new race report format too. I couldn't resist the opportunity to make this report almost entirely pictorial. The photographers snapped more than 60 images of me over the course of the event. They show graphically how the marathon becomes a different beast after 20 miles.
Three cheers for your performance in tough conditions .
Ditto, my friend. What do you say to getting you and Aileen out for Jingle All The Way 5K in December?Mike MacLellan wrote:Had a great time taking in DC's sights with you and SPRINTING BY EVERY BAND ON THE COURSE.
Yep, 26.2 always takes its toll. I could have done it smarter. But boyz just wanna have fun. Good luck to you in Philly. It would be massive to see you in Boston in 2016.Seth Harrison wrote:OK Kevin, I was getting pretty pissed as I looked at your photos watching you cruise along so comfortably and chatting away on your way to BQ-10 min. 3:28 finish. It wasn't really. And you did far better in NYC than I did in DC.Gobbles wrote:Looked painful!
