I read in Marathonguide that hotels gone 2 months before the event, so want to plan ahead.

We booked about a month before the race in 2010. There were quite a few hotels that had no rooms available (including the Hilton, where the Expo was), but still, we had no trouble finding one close to the action. We ended up at the Quality Inns and Suites in Springfield. Nothing fancy, but it was clean, <$100/night, and <15 minute drive to the Expo and Hayward Field.
