Just some random questions to get everyone thinking about racing.

2. Same question, but time? Might be the same one, might not.
3. What's the fastest pace you've ever held for at least 1 mile?
4. Fastest pace you've ever held at any standard distance (100m+)?
5. Slow-twitch or fast twitch:

....5b. Which do you think is more developed now?
....5c. Which do you wish was more developed?
6. Your normal pacing strategy for a flat-ish marathon course?
7. Your normal pacing strategy on hills? Charge 'em or make up time on the descent?

3. Do you really care about the 4:1 carb:protein ratio when you finish a run?
4. What about the 1g carb/lb body weight when you finish a run?
5. Do you know what I'm talking about?
6. Boston food traditions?
7. Marathon food traditions?

SCIENCE

1. Most of us know that the best way to train is a well-rounded schedule with various systems being focused on at specific times... Do you actively study exercise physiology to keep building upon that basic knowledge?
2. Best book you've ever read for exercise/running physiology?
3. What's the single most important aspect of training, other than genetics?
4. Neil deGrasse Tyson: great astrophysicist or the best astrophysicist?

4. Guys: shave your legs?
5. Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when your nose gets plugged during a run? What a Face

RUNNING

1. What's your single longest run ever (distance)?
26.2 miles
2. Same question, but time? Might be the same one, might not.
5:02 HIM count? If just running, then 3:29:xx in a marathon
3. What's the fastest pace you've ever held for at least 1 mile?
6:10 for a 5K
4. Fastest pace you've ever held at any standard distance (100m+)?
Don't know...
5. Slow-twitch or fast twitch:
....5a. Which were you born with? I know, both, but which is more in line with your natural abilities?
I don't think I have a fast-twitch muscle in my body...
....5b. Which do you think is more developed now?
Slow
....5c. Which do you wish was more developed?
My brain?
6. Your normal pacing strategy for a flat-ish marathon course?
Go out too fast, crash and burn. OK, so I would think my strategy would be to hold a steady pace throughout - don't like the idea of being conservative in the beginning (not that it is a bad strategy, I just have a hard time adhering to that)
7. Your normal pacing strategy on hills? Charge 'em or make up time on the descent?
I'll take the descent...

FOOD

1. Fuel of choice on a LSD or long-fast-finish training run?
Vanilla bean GU
2. Fuel of choice during a marathon?
Same
3. Do you really care about the 4:1 carb:protein ratio when you finish a run?
I try to just eat something with carbs and leave it at that. Chocolate milk a lot of times
4. What about the 1g carb/lb body weight when you finish a run?
Not really practical. Eat when your hungry. Don't if your not?
5. Do you know what I'm talking about?
Yes, but I never thought that was too applicable
6. Boston food traditions?
Let you know when I get there
7. Marathon food traditions
Pasta with red sauce - and try not to throw up because you are nervous

SCIENCE

1.
Most of us know that the best way to train is a well-rounded schedule
with various systems being focused on at specific times... Do you
actively study exercise physiology to keep building upon that basic
knowledge?
No - and I agree with something Michele said that we are all an experiment of one
2. Best book you've ever read for exercise/running physiology?
Runners body
3. What's the single most important aspect of training, other than genetics?
Consistency - and having fun with it
4. Neil deGrasse Tyson: great astrophysicist or the best astrophysicist?
Didn't he used to be a great boxer?

MISC

1. If you weren't an endurance athlete, what sport would you play and why?
I wouldn't play anything because I'm an awful athlete - but I would love to play hockey if I had an ounce of coordination and could skate. If I didn't dislike getting my face pounded in and enjoyed doing it to someone else, an MMA fighter would be pretty cool. Unfortunately I would get beat down 99.9% of the time and I would probably feel really badly if I ever hurt anyone else!
2. Hands down favorite beer/wine of all time?
O'Douls. I know that is lame, but that is really all that I usually ever drink...
3.
You just got a free entry to any one running race/event in the world.
Airfare and accommodations are included. Where and why?
Western States 100. Not that I could actually do it, but it would be sooooo cool! Or maybe Kona, but I wouldn't want to go if I didn't earn it.
4. Guys: shave your legs?
Usually yes, lately no. During triathlon season and when I'm riding a lot I usually do...

5.
Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you
have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when
your nose gets plugged during a run? What a Face
6. Pulled this off an internet meme... Choose wisely, you can only have one:
.... - Everyone becomes attractive in your eyes
.... - Your luck in money increases, but love eludes you
.... - Your lifespan increases by 50%; nothing else changes
That would be cool as long as I didn't outlive my son...
.... - You become a super genius, but your lifespan decreases by 50%
.... - You can talk to animals and your senses become keener; nothing else changes
.... - You get one chance to change one part of your body permanently
.... - You can see parts of the future, but no one will ever believe you
.... - Every month a satchel of weed(from the meme)/case of wine/case of beer appears in your mail; you gain nothing else.
7. Best song with "Friday" in the title or lyrics?
Kickin' in the front seat

Sittin' in the back seat..... - man, that was funny!

FOOD

4. Guys: shave your legs?
5. Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when your nose gets plugged during a run? What a Face I've gotten compliments during marathons on my snot rocket abilities.
6. Pulled this off an internet meme... Choose wisely, you can only have one:
.... - Everyone becomes attractive in your eyes
.... - Your luck in money increases, but love eludes you
.... - Your lifespan increases by 50%; nothing else changes
.... - You become a super genius, but your lifespan decreases by 50%

7. Best song with "Friday" in the title or lyrics? can't really think of one. I know that Finally Friday country song but I can't say it's all that great...

RUNNING

1. What's your single longest run ever (distance)? In a race, 26.2. As a long run, I think 22-something.

2. Same question, but time? Might be the same one, might not. 3:50 is the longest amount of time I've ever run. My first marathon.

3. What's the fastest pace you've ever held for at least 1 mile? 5:12

4. Fastest pace you've ever held at any standard distance (100m+)? I think I did a 400 in 1:12 one time during a workout. That felt pretty fast. I'd like to try for a sub 5:00 mile but it would take some specific work.

5. Slow-twitch or fast twitch:
....5a. Which were you born with? I know, both, but which is more in line with your natural abilities? I get confused about which one is which. Slow-twitch is the endurance one? Geez, I don't know....natural abilities? Neither? Both? About the same, I guess. I was always a soccer player which is kind of right in the middle on relying on both.

....5b. Which do you think is more developed now? I've definitely lost all explosive first step kind of speed. Partly distance running training and mostly just getting old old old.
....5c. Which do you wish was more developed? I wish I could make one move with the ball and go like in the old days but now I have to use trickery and misdirection and that doesn't usally work very well.
6. Your normal pacing strategy for a flat-ish marathon course? Slowish first 2 (goal MP +15 or more) and then get into goal pace and hang on for as long as possible.
7. Your normal pacing strategy on hills? Charge 'em or make up time on the descent? Run the descents hard and bleed time on the ups but try not to die. I'm much better on the downs than ups.

FOOD

1. Fuel of choice on a LSD or long-fast-finish training run? Blueberry Roctane GU
2. Fuel of choice during a marathon? Same
3. Do you really care about the 4:1 carb:protein ratio when you finish a run? I like chocolate milk which has that ratio.
4. What about the 1g carb/lb body weight when you finish a run? Huh?
5. Do you know what I'm talking about? Obviously not!
6. Boston food traditions? At least one visit over the weekend to Union Oyster House.
7. Marathon food traditions? I like a traditional pasta late lunch or early dinner the night before.

SCIENCE

1. Most of us know that the best way to train is a well-rounded schedule with various systems being focused on at specific times... Do you actively study exercise physiology to keep building upon that basic knowledge? Uh....say what?
2. Best book you've ever read for exercise/running physiology? I enjoy all of the Matt Fitzgerald books and I think own all of them.
3. What's the single most important aspect of training, other than genetics? Consistency. Do the same simple thing for 6 months straight (ie run 5 days a week) and the improvements take care of themselves much more than overdesigning some strategy but being on again/off again over time with the training.
4. Neil deGrasse Tyson: great astrophysicist or the best astrophysicist? I like that guy. He's on the Daily Show a lot.

MISC

1. If you weren't an endurance athlete, what sport would you play and why? I still play soccer once a week so I guess that. If I came back in another life, I would play lacrosse. They didn't have it for boys where I grew up but that would have been the IDEAL sport for me.
2. Hands down favorite beer/wine of all time? Not a hands down winner but Hoegaarden in my current favorite.
3. You just got a free entry to any one running race/event in the world. Airfare and accommodations are included. Where and why? Airfare and accomodations included? Hello, Kauai Marathon. Don't care much about doing the event but thanks for the free flight and hotel hookup.
4. Guys: shave your legs? Ha ha. No. Hell no.
5. Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when your nose gets plugged during a run?
6. Pulled this off an internet meme... Choose wisely, you can only have one:
.... - Everyone becomes attractive in your eyes
.... - Your luck in money increases, but love eludes you
.... - Your lifespan increases by 50%; nothing else changes
.... - You become a super genius, but your lifespan decreases by 50%

I'll take the living 50% longer.
7. Best song with "Friday" in the title or lyrics?

Hmmm....Friday I'm In Love by the Cure popped into my head. Oh, in lyrics too....hmmm.....I'm going to kick myself for something I don't think of but nothing is coming to mind right now.

Happy Friday!

5. Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when your nose gets plugged during a run? What a Face Not a lady, but I've recently started. The cold makes it happen.

Friday Thread - 4/6 Empty Re: Friday Thread - 4/6

Post  Michael Enright Fri Apr 06, 2012 5:23 pm

Wow, I've been in depositions where they asked fewer questions!

RUNNING

1. What's your single longest run ever (distance)? 26.2
2. Same question, but time? Might be the same one, might not. Slowest = 4:43:xx
3. What's the fastest pace you've ever held for at least 1 mile? 6:07 (1 mile race)
4. Fastest pace you've ever held at any standard distance (100m+)? see 3 above.
5. Slow-twitch or fast twitch:
....5a. Which were you born with? I know, both, but which is more in line with your natural abilities? Actually, I think I do better with shorter distances, though I'm not very fast.
....5b. Which do you think is more developed now? Slow, right now - I am training for a marathon at the end of May, running 4 days a week, and am only running 8+ mile training runs.
....5c. Which do you wish was more developed? Slow.
6. Your normal pacing strategy for a flat-ish marathon course? Steady as she goes
7. Your normal pacing strategy on hills? Charge 'em or make up time on the descent? Over the years, I have settled into slow down on the way up - I've worn myself out charging up them, and accelerated my leg cramps

FOOD

1. Fuel of choice on a LSD or long-fast-finish training run? Roctane, any flavor
2. Fuel of choice during a marathon? Same, though I'll eat any gel - Hammers are good
3. Do you really care about the 4:1 carb:protein ratio when you finish a run? No, I just finished a 21 miler and ate a chocolate covered graham cracker!
4. What about the 1g carb/lb body weight when you finish a run? I've heard of that Very Happy
5. Do you know what I'm talking about? sorta kinda
6. Boston food traditions? I only go to Boston for work, and I just eat the food there! Someday...
7. Marathon food traditions? None, really. Just pasta preferably the night before and cheerios and banana the morning of.

SCIENCE

1.
Most of us know that the best way to train is a well-rounded schedule
with various systems being focused on at specific times... Do you
actively study exercise physiology to keep building upon that basic
knowledge? Nope, other than an occasional article in a running mag or mainstream press. I have read some more scientific stuff, but it did not hold my interest.
2. Best book you've ever read for exercise/running physiology? I like Hal's marathon guide, and Jack Daniels (the coach/author, not the booze) Running Formula, too.
3. What's the single most important aspect of training, other than genetics? Not going too fast in typical training runs.
4. Neil deGrasse Tyson: great astrophysicist or the best astrophysicist? I thought he was Mike Tyson's father.

MISC

1. If you weren't an endurance athlete, what sport would you play and why? I don't know. I like to ski, and play tennis, but haven't in a long time.
2. Hands down favorite beer/wine of all time? I drank enough Old Style and assorted other beers for a lifetime before I was 30. They were all my favorite. I don't drink any more.
3.
You just got a free entry to any one running race/event in the world.
Airfare and accommodations are included. Where and why? London Marathon. I've always wanted to go to London (for some reason, though I offered to take my wife and 4 kids, I can't get them to go) and running the marathon would be way cool.
4. Guys: shave your legs? Only if I needed to for surgery.
5.
Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you
have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when
your nose gets plugged during a run? What a Face
6. Pulled this off an internet meme... Choose wisely, you can only have one:
.... - Everyone becomes attractive in your eyes
.... - Your luck in money increases, but love eludes you
.... - Your lifespan increases by 50%; nothing else changes
.... - You become a super genius, but your lifespan decreases by 50%
.... - You can talk to animals and your senses become keener; nothing else changes Very Happy
That one that goes "Friday, I'm in love..."

RUNNING

1. What's your single longest run ever (distance)? 50k
2. Same question, but time? Might be the same one, might not. Same, 5:44 I think. 3,100ft of climb.
3. What's the fastest pace you've ever held for at least 1 mile? 5:35 I think. One of these days I need to try a 5 min mile. I think I might be able to hold on.
4. Fastest pace you've ever held at any standard distance (100m+)? No clue. I haven't ever really sprinted before.
5. Slow-twitch or fast twitch: slow
....5a. Which were you born with? I know, both, but which is more in line with your natural abilities? Slow
....5b. Which do you think is more developed now? Slow
....5c. Which do you wish was more developed? Slow
6. Your normal pacing strategy for a flat-ish marathon course? Goal MP + 20 mile one, goal MP + 10 mile two, then goal MP until I crack. But I'm going to go out slower this time. Maybe 15-30 seconds slower the first 3-4 miles. See how that works.
7. Your normal pacing strategy on hills? Charge 'em or make up time on the descent? Don't worry about time. Run by effort. You can not make up the time on the descent without doing damage so why try?

FOOD

1. Fuel of choice on a LSD or long-fast-finish training run? Accel Gel - vanilla
2. Fuel of choice during a marathon? Mixture of Accel Gels and Gatorade. Going to take electrolyte tablets this time too.
3. Do you really care about the 4:1 carb:protein ratio when you finish a run? Yes, low-fat chocolate milk within 20 minutes
4. What about the 1g carb/lb body weight when you finish a run? Never heard that one before but I eat a crap-ton of carbs post long run so I think I'm good.
5. Do you know what I'm talking about? Sorta
6. Boston food traditions? No tradition having only raced Boston once.
7. Marathon food traditions? Pre-race breakfast is always a whole wheat bagel smeared with PB, banana, big glass of OJ and as much Gatorade as I can stomach until 45 min before. Then I relax on food and water for 30 min. Then drink a lot more the last 15 min before the gun. I read this is optimal for hydrating and clearing your system. Seems to work.

SCIENCE

1. Most of us know that the best way to train is a well-rounded schedule with various systems being focused on at specific times... Do you actively study exercise physiology to keep building upon that basic knowledge? Yes. I love the science around training.
2. Best book you've ever read for exercise/running physiology? Pfitzinger's Advanced Marathoning really set the foundation for me.
3. What's the single most important aspect of training, other than genetics? Consistency.
4. Neil deGrasse Tyson: great astrophysicist or the best astrophysicist? Who?

MISC

1. If you weren't an endurance athlete, what sport would you play and why? Soccer. Love, love, love that sport. Or surfing.
2. Hands down favorite beer/wine of all time? Off the top of my head I'll say New Glarus Spotted Cow and a good Cab from Napa (too many to list).
3. You just got a free entry to any one running race/event in the world. Airfare and accommodations are included. Where and why? UTMB. It's the de-facto ultra these days. That or Western States. Would love that belt buckle. Why? Because I want to be a real trail runner. The transition starts this summer.
4. Guys: shave your legs? I have. I won't again. My ex-girlfriend hated it and I suspect my current GF will feel the same.
5. Ladies: equivalent question pertaining to a gender-atypical habit you have that's associated with running? Maybe blowing snot-rockets when your nose gets plugged during a run? What a Face
6. Pulled this off an internet meme... Choose wisely, you can only have one:
