I think the only option is to really take a break from running and the PT agrees. So the marathon is less than 2 weeks away. The training is in the bag at this point. I'm not going to run on the road at all this week. I'll swim and aqua jog to preserve cardio fitness. We both think that Pilates will be OK...plus the exercises he's given me. We'll make a decision about next week next week.
At this point the original pain is completely gone and doesn't come back when I run. The pain is lower on the hip and wraps around the back. He thinks it's in the hip flexor and the glutes. I'm sure that I've changed my stride...not intentionally...as a result of the pain. He thinks that as a result I'm using weak muscles that I don't normally use and they are complaining. He could feel some tightness in several spots but they loosened up pretty well after he put the TENS and heat on it. Oddly enough he's pleased to hear that the pain keeps moving around. He said that was an indication that it was a weakness and not a tear or something more serious.
On a positive side it is feeling better this evening. I could run the marathon tomorrow if I needed to but I'd sure like to toe the start line without any pain!
You need to do maintenance on the tractor. Change the oil, check the PTO, replace the U-joints, sharpen what's dull. ANYTHING that keeps you on the farm.
Any questions?
To funny Doug...I offered to drive tractor after aqua jogging this morning and spent the entire day in the tractor! It was a good distraction.
Hip is feeling pretty good. It was hurting when I walked but it's just barely noticeable today. I do still intend to stay off the roads all week though.
I'm wondering about the exercises that the PT has me doing. I'm questioning the wisdom of trying to strengthen weak areas at this point. I'm concerned that if I do them incorrectly or just do to much I'll end up worse off. I'm thinking that I'm going to go back to my normal routine and not do anything new until after the race.

Re: Mulligan...
Monday was swimming and PT then I went to watch Emma's volleyball game.
Tuesday was Pilates and aqua jogging then I spent the afternoon in the tractor.
Today is swimming. Distractions include bookwork this morning and an orientation luncheon about volunteer opportunities at the local state prison. Not sure this will be a fit for me but it is an area with a lot of need.
Fun post race activity in Indianapolis...go-cart racing! It is Indianapolis after all. They are reported to go 40 mph!
Nepal trip is getting closer. Planning has been a good distraction. Vaccinations - check. Prescriptions - check. Gear list - check. Packing - to early. Practice hike - hmm that didn't work as planned. Marty has been to busy and I didn't want to aggravate the hip. He'll get in some good hard hiking on his elk hunting trip. I'll do a hike after the marathon if I'm able. I'm using well broken in shoes and back pack so should be OK. The actual trekking distances are relatively short and easy. It's the altitude that causes problems and we can't train for that.
Fun concert tonight.
10 days but who's counting?

Re: Mulligan...
Nine days.....
Fun day yesterday. Luncheon at the prison was an eye opening experience. They had an inmate at each table of four to visit with us and pour tea etc. I also had a guard at my table. Not sure that this is the volunteer experience that I'm looking for but I'm glad I went.
Then I went to a concert...The Gilly Girls. Four young girls from a ranching family in California playing and singing bluegrass, gospel and oldtime string. Boy are they talented.
I was tempted to walk down and get the paper yesterday (a mile round trip) but decided to behave myself. Swimming went well.
Hip is feeling better but I will admit that occasionally I can still feel a bit of a niggle. At this point the plan is to try a 2-3 mile run on Sunday with a couple striders just to see how it feels. Until then...it's aqua jogging and swimming.

Oh my.... Nancy's got taper madness! Bad.
Doug is right. REST!! There is nothing you can do to improve your fitness at this point, only tear it down.
If getting the flu is the only thing that'll keep Fast Freddy at bay, consider it. You need to get to the starting line!
As far as PT goes, it sounds like glutes and core need to be a long-term project for you. That'll help on the hip flexors.
(Remember also that some of these pains you have are likely taperitis.)
DON'T PANIC!

No! Not taperitis!! This is much more serious that I realized. See the results of my google search which entertained me for quite some time. Thanks Mark. Mark B wrote:Oh my.... Nancy's got taper madness! Bad.

DON'T PANIC!
Taperitis
Taperitis is an under-researched condition affecting mostly ultra athletes. It is a very serious condition affecting the sufferer's family as much as the athlete. Symptoms are wide ranging and can vary from the mildly annoying to a more serious life threatening stage.
Typically symptoms begin to appear around 2 weeks before a major race. Slight niggles appear usually in the legs. (Note - sufferers of taperitis are usually obsessed with the condition of their legs). Hamstrings tighten up, knees begin to ache and 'weird' feelings in a foot are very common. Suggestions of massage or making an appointment with a GP are usually met with a snort of derision. In the absence of a professional opinion, sufferers tend to Google their symptoms leading to self induced panic that a small mark on the leg is a tick bite and that they actually have Lymes disease. Other notable conditions include suspicion of brain hemorrhage, ulcer, cartilage damage, weight gain and even pregnancy.
Athletes are unable to run at their usual frequency leading to reduced levels of adrenalin. This in turn affects their mood. This can range from an out of sorts feeling to being an out and out grumpy bastard. The usual encouragement of "Get your shoes on, go out a run and give me peace" do not work in this phase. Family members need to find alternative coping strategies for themselves such as knitting while drinking white wine.
In the 2 weeks prior to a major event, sufferers of taperitis will take a closer than normal look at their eating and drinking habits and attempt to undo 50 weeks of unhealthy activity. Alcohol is prohibited and strange beetroot drinks become fashionable. Salad items such as tomatoes will suddenly appear on the breakfast menu alongside sausages in an attempt to convince themselves that they are eating healthily. Other items disappear from the fridge such as chicken breasts cooked for the next evening meal. Pasta becomes the carbohydrate of choice (mildly annoying symptom)
Lastly, sufferers of taperitis have more time on their hands. They have more time to spend at home with their families. In this phase they become more observant and notice little things they might not have noticed before. They will offer suggestions to improve the running of the household and comment on the state of the garden. Unfortunately they are not able to physically participate in any household chores as they could be prone to injury. Removal of a toilet brush from an athlete's throat would be a very serious injury (clearly a life threatening symptom)
Fortunately, taperitis rarely lasts longer than 2 weeks and is instantly cured on the weekend nearest the longest day of the year. TFFT!!

I've officially put Wise Willy at the wheel during the remainder of training and on race day. He has strict instructions to keep Fast Freddy locked securely in the trunk until mile 23 at the earliest! I've suggested a race day strategy that puts Safe Sally and Save it up Sammy in place as co-captains until mile 20. Then I think we're going to have to call on Tough it out Tommy and Calm Down Carol to get me through mile 20. That's going to be a tough mile mentally as well as physically. Fast Freddy can enjoy the finish after being locked in the trunk for 4 hours!
**
Pilates and Aqua Jogging yesterday. Sara had us do some short hard intervals which got my HR up without stress on the hip. I'm anxious to try out the hip but determined to give it a couple more rest days first.
I'm actually handling taper pretty well all things considered. I've been able to find things to occupy my time and I'm resigned to the fact that I've done the training...rest is best for the hip...and whatever happens on race day happens. I'm going to put forth my best effort and then move on to whatever life brings.

Well, it's about durn time Freddy has stopped his non-productive ways!
Regarding Nepal, have you thought about letting the US Embassy in Nepal know that you're coming? There's an easy way to do, what our State department calls 'Smart Traveler Enrollment Program' or 'STEP'
There's an app for it or you can do it online at https://step.state.gov/step/
If there are any emergencies and you note where you're going to be when, the embassy can work on it.
Give it some thought.

Fast Freddy is very determined and a tough one to control...
I read about the ability to register with the State department and the company that we're traveling with included a recommendation to register when they sent out our last update. Sounds like a really good idea. I have a long list of things to do after my marathon while Marty is still gone elk hunting and it's at the top of the list!
Felt a bit sluggish at swimming yesterday but I'm not surprised or concerned.

Re: Mulligan...
3 miles with 4 x 30 second striders. Kept the pace moderate and other than the expected creakiness after not running for 5 days it felt pretty good. I may have cheated just a bit and done this run Saturday afternoon rather than waiting till Sunday as planned but the weather was absolutely gorgeous and I just couldn't resist. Couple niggles this morning but I think it's just from not running for several days...and taperitis. Hip didn't act up at all.
Very tempted to run again today as it's a nice day again but I'll behave and wait till tomorrow and do another similar run...short and moderate pace.
**
Interesting distraction today. I "got to" help Marty tie rebar for a concrete project that he's trying to get done before he leaves for elk hunting on Wednesday. We're installing a truck scales. We poured the slab last week. Walls are scheduled for Tuesday. He'll try and get the ramps poured between elk hunting and Nepal. If all goes as planned it will be cured out and ready for the installation of the scales while we're gone trekking.
Oh...and we got the mint planted. Kevin finished on Friday before he took the family to the beach for the weekend. I rolled the field down for him so he could get away a bit earlier.
***
Not that I've been checking or worrying but the weather doesn't look so great in Indianapolis on Saturday. When I first looked Saturday was predicted to be a nice day sandwiched in between wet stormy days. The rain moved into Saturday but at this point in time it doesn't look to bad during the time I'll actually be running. I can handle a little bit of rain...I just hope we don't get caught in a thunderstorm with pouring rain and high winds. I can't worry about things that I can't change!

Good luck this weekend, Nancy. I will be following along. My sister and niece might see you but she has some kind of lesson/practice that morning that takes them in the opposite direction. Theya re going to try and catch some of the runners near Butler.

Thanks Michele. Hope they don't stand out in the rain to long. Looks like it's going to be a wet one.
I better quit checking the weather forecast. Every time I check the chance of rain increases and it moves earlier in the day. They are now predicting rain for the entire race. I've done a fair bit of cold weather running but haven't run in the rain much. Could face some issues that I haven't had to deal with in the past...chafing? At this point the temps look reasonable and the winds aren't terrible. Hoping it improves between now and Saturday but if not I'll make the best of it.
:running:Got in 3 miles this morning with striders. Kept the pace moderate. Felt good. Still nervous about the hip holding up and wishing I'd had a more normal taper but I can't worry about that now.
I went to swimming but didn't do the full workout. Kept the effort pretty easy with a few harder laps mixed in.
5 days...let's do this!

Bring a dry cleaning bag for the rain. Cut a hole for your head and arms and maybe to your waist, before you fly out. It's the lightest and most flexible for the money...zero.
I'll check the weather forecasts and see what I might be able to sift from their speak.

Well, Nancy, I can tell you with pretty good assurance that it will be cloudy. Telling you how much it will rain will not be possible this far away from Saturday. There are just too many moving parts. But you want it like the National Weather Service has it right now, which is scattered showers and more south of Indy, with heavier showers Sunday. Temps 45 for Saturday morning with a high in the mid 50's.
So, temps aren't going to change a whole lot during the day. I'll keep an eye on it.

Re: Mulligan...
The thoughts for the weekend are still not set even in Jello, much less set in concrete.
An average day in November is 52 for a high and 35 for a low.
From the NWS Forecast Discussion for Friday to Sunday:
Issued at 145 PM EDT Tue Oct 31 2017
Temperatures should definitely be above normal. Otherwise this is a
low confidence forecast. Errors could exceed 5 degrees with
temperature predications, and 20 percent with POPs.
The models agree fairly well on the overall pattern, which will
favor warmth. The GFS and ECM both place a frontal boundary close to
or right over Indiana much of the time. This causes a lot of
forecast uncertainty. Even a small error locating the boundary could
lead to a big error in the forecast for a given location.
So, there's a front ('frontal boundary') to go through Indianapolis, but is expected to become a warm front and back its fanny through Indianapolis.
They can't say now when or where it'll do this.

Re: Mulligan...
Thanks for the weather update Doug. I'd prefer cooler temps...I like running in the 30's and 40's but 50's are OK. I'd prefer a cloudy day over a windy rainy day that's for sure. I looked at a couple of the forecasts and they aren't all that consistent. Some have more rain in them during race time than others. Winds don't look awful but they are a bit higher than I'd like. I'll just go prepared and see what happens on race day. The dry cleaning bag is a good suggestion. The start is right outside of our hotel but depending on the intensity of the rain you can get pretty wet in just a few minutes.

Pilates and Aqua jogging this morning. I didn't push to hard. It did feel nice to move a bit though. Kind of a fun morning. We had some new folks in both classes. Ralph joined us in our all girl aqua jogging class. We decided we should be polite and ask his name etc. Wasn't long before I realized that Ralph's mom and I were in the same high school class! It's a small world!

I'm pleased that you're taking it easy. Keep it like we smoke briskets down here, low and slow.
Thursday's forecasts will be tighter on Saturday's weather, yet it may still be a wild card shot. The below slide might even update, as the NWS updates.

Thanks Mark. I am feeling ready. I'm nervous which is to be expected but I do feel like I've done the best I can to be prepared. Hoping the hip holds up but even more nervous about the mental aspect of getting through mile 20. I know I can do this!
Weather is trending in the right direction as far as wind and rain is concerned for those morning hours when I'll be on the course. Temps look a bit higher than I'd like but still reasonable.
Up early this morning to get Marty off for his elk hunting trip. I've got a lot to do today to make sure I'm ready to go tomorrow and also have some details to attend to for our Nepal trip so I have plenty of distractions.
I plan on getting in a very short run later this morning. Still undecided about swimming. I planned to do a few minutes of recovery effort but I want to be careful not to overdo it. Tomorrow will be a travel day with no opportunity to run. I'll do a short shakeout run to loosen up the legs on Friday morning and then take it easy till race time.

Re: Mulligan...
Looking more consistent.
Friday
A 30 percent chance of showers before 8am. Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 59. North northeast wind around 8 mph.
Friday Night
Partly cloudy, with a low around 45. Northeast wind around 6 mph.
Saturday
A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 61.
Saturday Night
A chance of showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 58. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
I'd take the above weather forecast. Tomorrow, you'll be watching local Indy TV for weather. I believe Indiana is NOT on daylight savings time, so you won't have to fall back, while there.
Good luck, don't fret because your hip will be fine up to mile 25, then you'll be too far along to not get a BQ.

Yup...I'll take that forecast. I'd prefer a bit cooler conditions but it could be a lot worse.
I'm packed. I watched the last pitch. Yay Astros! Coffee pot is set. I'm off to bed.
I just need to run a mile in 10 minutes 26 times and then sprint to the finish! I hope Wise Willy is ready and Fast Freddy is securely locked in the trunk.

Recent forecast:
Friday
Cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 58. North wind around 10 mph.
Friday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers after 3am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 46. East wind around 8 mph.
Saturday
A 40 percent chance of showers. Cloudy, with a high near 63. East southeast wind around 8 mph.
Saturday Night
A 40 percent chance of showers, mainly after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 60. South southwest wind 6 to 8 mph.
Nancy, note in the forecast the wind direction. The warm front will be pushed by the 'South southwest wind.' The East breeze on Friday night just might stick around into Saturday (indicative of no warm front passing through).
So, wind direction will give the clue as to location of the warm front, thereby the temperature. Know your compass direction and good luck!

Re: Mulligan...
That's a decent weather forecast. Great news!
Just keep telling Fast Freddy that he can have his way once you hit the final 5K. Then, it's his race.
Excited for you! Is there tracking?

Re: Mulligan...
I got a text from Nancy right after she finished saying that her legs gave out on her.
She went on to say that she couldn't get her Garmin to lock on to a satellite and lost her pace guide as a result and started too fast. If I had a marathon medal for everything I've done that... Oh, wait. I DO have a marathon medal for every time I've done that! I think we've all been there.
Nevertheless, Nancy persisted, even after the wheels fell off. I understand how she'd be disappointed, but I hope she knows she has a lot to be proud of.

Re: Mulligan...
Well that was a humbling experience. I got my finish but I definitely didn't finish well. That was the toughest marathon I've ever run...including Boston!
I was able to sync my GPS but it wasn't accurate in the first few miles in the downtown area so I wasn't able to get accurate pacing information. I did check my time at the mile markers and realized that I had gone out a little fast but thought I was doing OK. We were into mile 5 or 6 before I was getting accurate readings for my mile splits and by then the accumulative pace was pretty useless. I settled into marathon goal pace but by the 30K split I was already struggling and it went downhill from there. Cardio wise I was feeling great. Mentally I was still in it. My legs just totally gave up on me. By mile 20 runners and volunteers were asking me if I was OK or if I needed medical. They said I was wobbling. I kept thinking that if I could just maintain a reasonable pace...but my legs just would not cooperate. Eventually a couple walking breaks turned into a survival walk. I got the last of my nutrition in and texted Katie so she wouldn't worry and trudged on. At one point I thought a medical volunteer might pull me. At mile 25 I was able to muster a jogging pace until the finish. A couple of cute young military volunteers grabbed me at the finish line and helped me over to the fence where Katie was waiting. Not sure I would have made it without their help.
I know that those first few miles were a bit fast but I went back and looked at my BQ race splits and they were just as bad. Not sure if the mileage that I missed allowing the hip to heal was a factor? In spite of those missed runs I had more mileage than I've ever had before...and good training runs. And a good tune up half. I do think that this race was to flat for me. My nutrition plan was executed well. I did spend a bit of time on my feet on Friday but Katie and I were careful not to do to much. I could feel the hip during the run but it didn't hurt...did I subconsciously change my stride during the time I was tapering and/or on race day to protect it?
It really doesn't matter why at this point. It is what it is and it's time to move on. I can't do this again. I promised myself and my family that no matter what the outcome this would be my last competitive marathon and I intend to keep that promise. My goal when this all started was to stay fit enough to enjoy my grandchildren and to set an example for them. I didn't quit and I'm proud of that but setting reasonable goals and finding an appropriate balance in life is also important.
