I love reading your training blog, Kenny. It makes me 'feel' like I'm out there pounding the pavement. I thirst for it...so keep up the good work Wink

@Tom H wrote:Kenny, looks like you nailed that run just the way you wanted to. What is your training philosophy right now as you are preparing to begin the actual training cycle? You indicate you are ramping up miles in preparation for that, what are you running right now on a weekly basis?

Tom - I usually don't do an 18 week marathon program because it seems daunting to train 18 weeks. So instead I do 12-16 (this coming cycle 14) but keep in mind I am at the tail end of a 10 week cycle training for 5 mile race. Avg weekly miles have been 43 but the last few weeks avg is 50 peaking at 54. This is with lots of speed work and short distance races. The last 4-5 weeks of this cycle helps me segue into more marathon specific training especially my tempo/interval runs which help me handle the FCR runs of 4-7 miles which kill me usually.

My upcoming marathon cycle will be avg over 60 per week peaking around 75. Followed by 5 weeks for a second marathon. I tend to do better on the second one.

Thanks! You will be back there maybe we should all hover over the pavement not pound so much!

Thought of the day!
You know you're a runner when...having sex with your spouse feels like you're cheating on your running.

Training Today
6:00am - 72 degrees 96% humidity. Like running through cottage cheese.
(ugh). Actually coming off two hard days the recovery run today felt
like a piece of cake (as it should) despite the weather. My legs felt
quite happy out there. HR was par for the course @ 135. Running on
perceived effort my pace ended up being on the slower side. The run did
my body good.

Upcoming

8 miles @ GA w/8x100 strides.

You guys must be getting the tail end of what we had on Monday. It's been fantastic for running the last 2 nights in St. Louis. Sunny, a little breeze and low 80s, which is about as good as it gets here in mid to late June. I just wish it would last another couple months instead of just for the week!

When's the next race?

I hope it is the tail end. Next race is July 9th - Belmar 5 mile. Typically it is very hot and do not run well at this race in past. Comparison last year ran it a minute slower then the 5 mile race a few weeks before. I am doing that again this year. Last year it was 80's and freakin' humid it was a torturous race. If I can get decent weather I hope to go sub 35. It is my last race before office marathon training be nice to go out with another PR.

Here here! Love the quote right up my alley. (But I think you knew that)

Thought of the day!
"Food was never intended to be used as fun. Food was intended to be used as nourishment."- KB

Training Today
6:00am - Despite the 96% humidity (again and wringing out my singlet) I nailed this run. I Ran 8 miles @ GA pace w/8x100m strides. 7:58 pace during GA portion w/ a low HR 158. This is exactly where I want to be on these runs. Compared to last year this time I was HR 166 pace 8:05. I am starting to feel very confident as I move into marathon training I can shoot for sub 3:20 this cycle. (I think)

Upcoming

Tomorrow is an easy 5 miles followed buy 14 @ LSD w/5 @ mp.

I have to say, food is fun. I remember the parable about food - when poor, the concern is whether there is any at all, at the next level,, it should taste good, at the next level, it should taste and look good. At that point, with some good company, or a good book when on a work trip alone Smile, food is fun.

Thought of the day!
"Life begins at the end of your comfort zone" - NDW

Training Today
Just
a recovery run today but it was the longest 5 miles. I felt the heat
and humidity right away (although only 70 and 85%) and was sweating
quite a bit from the start. Legs just never felt great and did not find
my rhythm until well until I stopped. Hopefully the run served its
purpose to recover for tomorrows LSD 14. HR and pace were par for the
course!

I am really impressed with your running and getting out in the humidity like you are. The humidity just zaps energy and you ran a strong 8 miles at GA pace WITH 8 x 100m strides and a low HR no less! Wow! I think you're going to be very happy with your sub 3:20 time Smile

Thought of the day!
"Hope is not something you need to search for, just notice you are breathing."

Training TodayWent to the beach today to run 14 miles w/ last 4 @ MP. The weather
overall was beautiful: Sunny, 70 and not to humid w/little wind. Forgot
how much I miss running down here. Plan was to run the first 10 miles @
LSD and keep my HR avg under 160 and never going to much over 160 for
any given mile. I hit that goal with HR avg of 157 and only touching
down on 160-163 a few times. Pace was 8:28 on target as well. My 4 @ MP
is 7:35-7:40 ended up avg 7:32 a bit faster then planned w/HR avg of 177
but did hit 180 last mile w/ 7:28 pace which is a bit too fast.
Overall legs felt great and this was a good confidence boost that I can
go into marathon training at 7:35-7:40.

Upcoming

Tomorrow day off from running!
