JFK Registration Opens Today
Hey All, Just a heads up that JFK registration opens today for A standard runners.
Wendy and I are planning to run it this year. Is anyone else in?

Been debating it. Want to but mid-July to mid-August is going to be tough to get many long runs in due to work. Not sure if I could get away with that especially being that this would be my first 50M.

thinking about it. never done anything longer than a marathon, and only on roads for that matter.
Just curious, in their registration windows, they list "elite masters" as one of the categories. I couldn't find a definition of it. Any ideas?
Question for you experienced ultra runners, if I run Chicago or Twin Cities in early/mid Oct, can you recover in time to do this race?

I'll crew for any and all entrants from these boards.T Miller wrote:Wendy and I are planning to run it this year. Is anyone else in?
It can be done on routine marathon training with a few back-to-back weekend long runs and a few really long runs thrown in for good measure. So don't let your expected paucity of long runs in the summer deter you. Moreover, with fully stocked aid stations every 5 miles or so, it's an excellent race for your first ultra.Alex Kubacki wrote:Been debating it. Actually it's "elite seniors" (probably) 60 years & older. You're easily A-Standard so you don't need the "senior" classification.mountandog wrote:they list "elite masters" as one of the categories.
Easily. I ran it fairly well three weeks after MCM.mountandog wrote:if I run Chicago or Twin Cities in early/mid Oct, can you recover in time to do this race?

Sweet Kevin! What are our chances of getting in with an A standard?

Ok I sent in my entry form. I will be a solo for this, so send out the rescue dogs if I'm still not finished by the next day as I'm probably unconscience somewhere out on the course.

Chances are excellent. If you haven't posted them yet, get your entry forms in the mail NOW. I believe the race will fill with A-standard entries.T Miller wrote:Sweet Kevin! Welcome Aboard Alex. Get ready for a bona fide endurance test. There will be no need for rescue dogs. Rest assured that you will be in the company of other runners throughout.

I am most definitely in to crew with Kevin - I missed doing it last year and was upset that I did. This year since I'm not running a Thanksgiving Half and I am travelling to NYC, I figure I'll just head east a few days earlier. Watch out Kevin as here I come.
Re: JFK Registration Opens Today
Wait. There's entry standards? Yipes! Well, it's a good thing I hadn't been hoping to do JFK this year, because the only marathon finish in their window for qualifying races (Tecumseh 2011) was so slow that it wouldn't even hit the "elite senior" standard.
Good luck guys! I'll cheer you on from afar.

Re: JFK Registration Opens Today
If you want to run it, enter it ASAP. It will likely sell-out in a week or so.
You can run a maraton in October and then run the 50 - it's speed-work for the ultra
I'd love to run it again, but probably another year.

Re: JFK Registration Opens Today
My entry was mailed this morning at 8am! Hoping to make it in this year. If so I have one goal and that is to run 6:30 or better! If that is to happen will have to run the AP section smart, strong and swift.
Build-up race for this years JFK:
Boston long run
Big ten 10k (july)
North country 50 miler (August) this will be a test to see were my fitness is at. Was suppose to run it last year but differed till this year due to the birth of Kristina
Chicago marathon (October)
Currently working on my plan and should be posting it in my blog tomorrow along with consistent weekly updates! I'm back and ready to take this challenge on!

Didn't know registration opened up already. Seems to open earlier and earlier every year. Based on this thread, I sent my application out Wednesday. I hope there is space available. Last year, I swore I would never do it again. Not sure why I am signing up again.

Haha Vivian is hooked now!
Also if anyone is interested in reading a good book about JFK go pick up "The Longest Race" I just started reading it and I found it to be a great read. It is bringing back memories of running JFK!
It's about Ed Ayres attempt at breaking the 60 year old age group record at the 2001 race.

The first sign you can tell is if you check cashed at the bank. That is how I normally first tell. As for there website I think it will be either this weekend or middle of next week they will start to update the entries.

So KB are you ready to help get me to that PR this coming year!!! I also look forward to that big huge at the finish line again this year. Between the great conversation and running together along the Tow path. The other great moment of the day was seeing you with your arms up in the air as I approached the finish line and then the awesome group huge!

Did it.. Ugh. Trevor (my eldest son) and I sent our apps in today. We'll see if we get in. If we do, I will be relying on y'all to sort through this. Never attempted anything like it before.

Why people want to run more than 26.2 miles is just beyond Jerry's lazy mind!

That's probably prudent given the hip/pelvis stress fracture/reaction you're dealing with Whitney. Such an injury can take a very long time to heal. But it's a damn shame too. It's clear that we will have our largest contingent ever in the JFK50 this year -- first-timers Tim & Wendy, Alex, Michael & Trevor will join veterans Vivian and Schuey on the course supported by Michele and I and likely others. You will be missed.wrichman wrote:I'd love to run it again, but probably another year.
Maybe you'd like a piece of this action too Mark. As crew you could support, track and even pace one of our runners. Think about it.Mark B wrote:Good luck guys! I'll cheer you on from afar.

Good sir, it shall be my honor. May I offer counsel? Six hours 30 minutes is a very ambitious target. In last year's record-breaking race, only 14 runners (all in the ultra-distance elite) broke that mark. As you know, tactics are paramount in this race. If the AT takes too much out of you, you'll pay for it after Antietam. If you're in very good condition and you are patient on the AT, you may make a serious bid at finishing in under seven hours. Even that mark is very ambitious. But come hell or high water, it shall be my honor.Schuey wrote:So KB are you ready to help get me to that PR this coming year!!!

You know KB I agree 100% with you know me and I'm sure it is going to be come hell or high water! At the same time I will be pretty smart with my decisions I make while on the course this year. Right now there doesn't go a day by without me thinking about my strategy and how I will approach the race this year. So many choices to make and each have there pros and cons and all can result in a very successful day to a very painful day!

Wow - lots of people doing this in 2013. As in year's past, I'm happy to host a party at my house post-race. Every year, we have a youth soccer tournament scheduled for the same weekend so I haven't been able to make it to the race itself yet.
